Allergy and Immunology Fellowship

Program Overview

The 2-year Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Allergy and Immunology Fellowship Training Program, affiliated with Nemours Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware and accredited by the听, provides knowledge and skills to pursue a career as a specialist treating children and adults with allergy, asthma and immune system disorders.

You will be exposed to a diverse patient population of all ages, in a wide range of clinical settings. You will also have support and encouragement to pursue basic science and clinical research efforts.

The Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) program stimulates critical thinking and can help prepare you with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a career as a specialist in the field. Based at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa., and Nemours Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware, the two-year program gives you balanced clinical and research experiences in pediatric and adult allergy, asthma and immunology.


Academic Experience

You will gain experience with the evaluation and management of a wide variety of allergy and immunology diagnoses. Throughout your fellowship, you will attend weekly educational conferences that include a series of didactic lectures to provide you with a thorough foundation in Allergy/Immunology board-relevant topics and a chance to present and review interesting patient cases. You will also have the opportunity to closely collaborate with multiple subspecialty teams, including Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant and Gastroenterology, during joint case conferences. Our annual fellows鈥 curriculum for participants in all programs includes instruction on research design, IRB navigation, grant writing, statistics, career and financial planning, teaching, communication, leadership, resiliency and wellness.

You will be provided with the necessary tools to prepare for the American Board of Allergy and Immunology exam as evidenced by the ongoing success of our fellows on these exams. During your 2 years, you will rotate every four weeks on core rotations that will provide you with the necessary pediatric and adult clinical experience and research opportunities for a successful career in Allergy/Immunology. You will play an active role in educating and training residents and will supervise medical students from Sidney Kimmel Medical College and other area medical schools.

We believe in the value of significant and meaningful research as a key component in fellowship training. You will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources, along with faculty mentorship, in order to meet your research goals. You will also have the opportunity and support to participate in multiple regional, national and international conferences.听


Clinical Experience

You will care for adult and pediatric patients with a wide range of Allergy and Immunology diagnoses including but not limited to: asthma, food and environmental allergies, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, eosinophilic disorders, urticaria, angioedema, drug allergy, anaphylaxis, autoimmune diseases, hymenoptera allergy, immune deficiency and transplant-immunology. Clinical sites include inpatient and ambulatory settings at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Nemours/Alfed I. Nemours Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware.

You will have the opportunity to perform food allergy testing and challenges, drug allergy testing, challenges and desensitizations, allergen immunotherapy prescription writing and allergen immunotherapy mixing. You will gain exposure to spirometry, pulmonary function testing and rhinolaryngoscopy. In addition, 听Nemours Children鈥檚 Hospital, Delaware is the only referral center in the state of Delaware for newborn SCID screening.

You will have voluntary opportunities to participate in related clinical rotations such as otolaryngology, pulmonology, dermatology, infectious disease and rheumatology. You will also be able to refine your teaching skills by interacting with residents and medical students at both academic centers.

Research

Throughout your training, you will be engaged in cutting-edge research in Allergy/Immunology. The faculty is motivated and supportive of the fellows鈥 research and have multiple ongoing scholarly projects that encompass many aspects of the field.

Following an early and thorough review of research design, methodologies, statistics and related topics, you will be encouraged and supported in your own efforts in basic science, translational and clinical research. We can tailor your fellowship projects to include subject matter that is of particular interest to you. We expect our fellows to be productive in research and to achieve at least two publications during their fellowship training. All fellows participate in quality improvement initiatives.

You will have opportunity to participate in collaborate research with other departments as well as other academic institutions. Fellows and faculty teams have submitted multiple NIH grants.
