Mitral Valve Disease

The mitral valve separates the two left chambers of the heart and includes two leaflets (thin, mobile flaps) that function like doors that open and close with each contraction of the heart. Among the group of mitral valve defects are two congenital (present at birth) conditions that can affect the mitral valve’s function: it’s either too loose (mitral insufficiency) or too tight (mitral stenosis). Some babies born with mitral valve disease may need surgery, and some may not need surgery at all — or won’t need it until they are a bit older.

At ²¨É«µ¥Ë« Cardiac Center, we offer leading-edge capabilities to detect heart problems early. If your baby has been diagnosed with any type of congenital mitral valve defect, our board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons (specialists in surgical procedures of the chest, including the heart and lungs) are here to answer your questions, address your concerns, and help with treatment plans for today, and the longer term. Our cardiac teams offer the latest in research-backed care, delivered within a family-centered setting.
